When does my car need an MOT?
If your car is more than 3 years old, you will need to have it MOT tested once a year. These tests are done to ensure that your car lives up to the minimum road safety and environmental standards.

How long does an MOT take?
MOTs take between 45 minutes to an hour on average.

How far in advance do I need to book an MOT?
To make it easiest for you, and to ensure that you don’t have to wait, we operate an appointment system. We generally book 2-3 days in advance but give us a ring and we will find a time which is convenient for the both of us. 

What will be checked at the MOT test?
The MOT test is a test of the most essential functions of your car. The testing standards are set on a national level, which is why you can only have your MOT test done at an approved MOT garage. Examples of functions which we test during an MOT include brakes, tyres, exhausts, suspension, the fuel system, steering, seatbelts, lights and mirrors.

How long is my MOT certificate valid?
When your car passes the MOT test, you will receive an MOT certificate. This certificate is valid for 12 months, and you can renew it at any time within the last month before it expires.

What if my MOT test shows that my car needs repairing?
We are not only an approved MOT garage, we also service and repair cars of all makes and models. That means that if your car needs any repairs, we can do it for you.

Can I have my tyres changed at the same time?
We are specialists in tyres, and have a wide range of tyres you can choose from so that you get tyres which fit your car and your budget!

What do I do if I lose my MOT certificate?
If you have lost your MOT certificate, you can easily get a new one from us as we hold a record of your MOT and will easily be able to print a new one off for you.

Where can I wait while you carry out the MOT test?
We have a waiting room where you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while you wait for the MOT test to be completed. If you would rather run a few errands while we carry out the test, you can do this instead. We will just let you know when the car will be ready, and you can come back to collect your new MOT certificate.

It is time for my car’s first MOT, how do I know when to have it tested?
The rule of thumb is that your car will need to have its first MOT test within 3 years after its registration date. If the car was used on road prior to its registration, for example if your car has been imported, the MOT test will be required 3 years from the end of the year of manufacture. So if your car was manufactured abroad at some point during 2006, your first MOT test will need to be carried out by the end of December 2009. If you are unsure about when your car will need its first MOT, give us a ring and we will be able to help you determine the MOT date for your car.

How do I know if a garage is an approved MOT garage?
The MOT symbol – the “blue three triangles” logo – can only be displayed by garages who are approved to carry out MOT tests and issue MOT certificates. At Car and Tyre Services, we have been an approved MOT garage since 1993 which means we have lots of experience in how to do thorough and efficient MOT tests.
